Green Skeem pushes musical boundaries in Michigan

The Michigan music scene is growing with many musical genres including rock, rap and even hip-hop and Green Skeem is capitalizing on the growing musical arena. Green Skeem is becoming a major name in the Michigan music scene for their honest and relax musical sound. The sound is pure and fans are responding to the honest tone that Green Skeem puts forward but it has taken many years in order to Green Skeem to become the band they are.

Green Skeem is willing to push musical boundaries even after facing multiple obstacles trying to come up in the Michigan music scene. Green Skeem talked openly about how difficult it was to start gaining a following in the Midwest music scene.

"It is always a challenge. The simple fact of where someone is from is enough to turn some people off from your music, but we're extremely thankful and blessed for the opportunities we've gotten and people we have met. It has always been fun to us and we think that has a lot do with our motivation. We always are pushing for more and trying to take it to the next step. We are just motivated people in general. Its taken time, but we got the right people around us now, we've put in a lot of work to get this far, and we know how much work this takes, and are ready to share the successes of it all together and that is just another reason we keep pushing forward," said members of Green Skeem.

Green Skeem has always strived to have their music be heard and their hard work is paying off, gaining more fans and live performances. I had the chance to interview Green Skeem. We discussed everything from how the group came together to how social media has changed the way they reach fans. The entire interview is below.

C: When did Green Skeem come together?

GS: We've always loved music, and growing up together we would always mess around and make beats and rap and sing over them. In 2008/2009 we recorded a few songs for the heck of it, and let our friends hear them. To our surprise they liked them and told us to make more, we continued recording and started taking it more serious and practicing day after day, and now it just turned into something we never got sick of and have only become more motivated than ever to do.

C: What would you consider to be some of your most notable music
influences at a younger age?

GS: There are so many, but we really got exposed to so much different music at a young age from our parents, then being the music fans we are it almost turned into a game where every time we hung out we would share what new music we had found with each other and just sit around and listen for hours and hours. Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Muddy Waters, Outkast, UGK, Devin The Dude, The Temptations, the list goes on and on. We are just huge, huge fans of music in general.

C: Green Skeem in a few words, how would you describe the band's musical sound?

GS: Honest and relaxed. We talk about what we know and don't try and be something we are not. We got sort of a laid back style about us, and we think that reflects in our music.

C: What musical influences do you pull from when you are performing or
writing music?

GS: Writing wise we wouldnt say anyone. Our influence is truly just life. We might write about our day, a big event thats happened in our life, or a conversation between us and our friends, it could really be anything. We love that about it though because that makes it unique, our music is really us! Everyone goes through the same type of struggles and triumphs in a different way, we just want to be relate-able.

Our performance is something we take so seriously. We love watching performances of other artists, talking about them and critiquing them. We learn from everything. There is nothing better than performing and having a crowd vibe with you or winning a crowd over, its the best feeling in the world and that is why we pay so much attention to making sure we always put on a good show for people.

C: Green Skeem has gained quite a large following in the Midwest, what was the process of coming up in the industry like?

GS: It is always a challenge. Its taken time, but we got the right people around us now, we've put in a lot of work to get this far, and we know how much work this takes, and are ready to share the successes of it all together and that is just another reason we keep pushing forward. We all want to do this for each other.

C: How would you guys as a band describe the Midwest music scene?

GS: Growing. We think the midwest scene is really dope. People are curious, and when there is so much new music constantly being made that is a great thing. People want to check out new music, they want to hear different styles, they want to explore. On the artist side its extremely fun too, cause that lets you be creative and try new things. We are always experimenting with our sound and trying new stuff to make our music better. All in all we love the midwest music scene, there is great support and people really pulling for you, and that is hard to find.

C: How do you all as a band feel social media has helped and will continue to help your career?

GS: Its probably the biggest thing there is. With so much music circulating constantly it gives you a chance to see an artist on a more personal level. Being able to promote your music, then have you friends post it, then blogs post it, etc... It really gives you a chance to be able to reach a huge audience of people. Not to say the music isn't the most important thing because without good music no one wants to listen to you regardless but social media has really changed the music is released and promoted.

C: What does the future of the band hold?

GS: We are currently working on our 5th mixtape called "Pine Island" which expect to be our best yet. We got some big shows coming up that we are preparing for, one we are extremely excited about that is with the legend Twista. Working on a number of videos and different promotional things. Like we said we are always striding forward and continue to take on more and more to further ourselves. We understand everything takes time, we just make sure we continue to push the envelope and never get to a stand still. This whole music thing is a blessing and everyone involved wants it more than ever. We believe in each other so much, and now having the management and team around us that we trust and believe in we think we are in a good position to take the next step.
