Green puppies? If not for the picture and video, I’m not certain if we would believe it. A pair of pups born to a litter came out Granny Apple green, shocking the Spanish dog breeders, who had never seen anything like it.
“I couldn't believe it when I first saw them,” said the mother dog’s owner. 27-year-old Aida Vallelado Molina. “I thought the puppies were maybe dirty somehow, and I tried to clean them, but the color wouldn't come off and then I realized it was the color of their fur.”
The pair of pups have a distinctively green coat, but seemed perfectly healthy otherwise at first. Molina reported however that the two tiny “Hulk”-like pups were actually not as strong as the others, and sadly, one died. However, the other green pup seems to be doing quite well.
Here is some YouTube vide of the pair, uploaded on June 12.
The reason for their odd color? Molina thinks it’s because of biliverdin – a bile pigment which can be found in the placenta.
The other little green guy is already starting to lose his color. Veterinarian Daniel Valverde said: “There are no other recorded cases of this happening in Spanish scientific literature. I am carrying out virological and bacteriological tests to try and find an answer” and confirm the biliverdin theory.
