Your guide to knowing what is trash and what is recyclable treasure.
- Glass: Make sure glass is not broken. If possible, sort by color. Lids go in with metal. DON'T recycle ceramics, windows, light bulbs or mirrors.
- Newspaper: Clean, dry newspaper and inserts should be tied together with twine or placed in a paper bag. DON'T recycle newspapers contaminated with mold.
- Plastic: Make sure to look at what number is stamped on the bottom of plastic containers; not all plastics are alike! Plastics stamped with #1 or #2 are good for recycling. However, the types of plastics accepted for recycling differs from place to place so check with your center to see what type are acceptable. Also, lids are usually a different type of plastic so make sure to check those too.
- Mixed paper: Magazines, junk mail, photocopies and cardboard (shoe boxes, cereal boxes, etc.) are good to go for recycling. Check to see if your recycling center accepts phone books or corrugated cardboard. DON'T recycle paper contaminated with mold or food, stickers, napkins, milk cartons or laminated paper. A good rule of thumb for recycling mixed paper: "When in doubt, throw it out."
- Grocery bags: Bags marked with a #2 or #4 are fine to recycle. You should re-use plastic grocery bags until they rip. Also, most grocery stores provide receptacles for recycling these bags.
- Metal: Cans, caps, lids and bands can all be recycled and used again and again. DON'T recycle spray cans or cans with paint or hazardous waste.
- Motor oil: NEVER dump motor oil into a storm drain or sewer. You can call 1-800-MOTOROIL, your garbage company or a tire shop for recycling options.
- Car batteries: NEVER throw car batteries in the trash. These can be taken to an automotive dealer or car parts shop for recycling.
- Rechargeable batteries (Phone, computer, etc.): Some can be thrown in the trash, but call 1-800-8BATTERY for more information on how to dispose of these.
- Paints, oils, cleaners, pesticides: NEVER dump these toxins into storm drains. Call your garbage company for more information.
- Other household goods: Items like eyeglasses and old electronics can be donated to charity!
