Green kitchen cleaners

See also

Green kitchen is good for the environment, but it is also a good way to keep your cleaning costs down. Environmentally friendly cleaners are usually made from cheap ingredients that most people already have around their house. Furthermore, green cleaning products are safe to keep around children, pets, and people with allergies to store-bought chemical cleaners.
Antibacterial Spray and Wipes
The first thing that you’ll need to clean a kitchen is a good antibacterial spray. This spray can be used for general cleaning and disinfecting of surfaces like granite, glass, porcelain, concrete, tile, and painted wood. There are several different recipes that can be used to make this spray. Each of these recipes is meant to be mixed into a one liter spray bottle.
Vinegar and Water
Fill a spray bottle about half way with white, distilled vinegar. Then add warm tap water until the bottle is full. Shake the bottle to mix the vinegar and water. Vinegar has been used for centuries by housewives to remove dirt and hard water deposits. The only drawback to this formula is that it can give a kitchen a strong vinegar scent. Because of this, opening a window when using this solution is recommended. Other people prefer to light a scented candle when using this spray, or use another formula.
Rubbing Alcohol, Lemon Juice, and Vinegar
To make this spray, mix together a cup of rubbing alcohol, a cup of warm water, and a tablespoon each of vinegar and lemon juice in a spray bottle. Shake the bottle to mix the ingredients. This spray can be used just about anywhere except untreated wood, because it can cause the wood to warp. If used in small quantities, this spray will dry on its own fairly quickly, making it ideal to use as a daily cleanser.
To turn any of these formulas into anti-bacterial wipes, pour one cup of the solution into a plastic container. Old containers of store-bought wipes work well for this. Next, add thirty sheets of paper towels to the container. Shake the container well until all of the paper towels are completely soaked. Use the wipes within two months of making them. Beyond this time frame, they will probably dry out.
Sink and Oven Cleaner
Cleaning the kitchen sink and other semi-porous surfaces in your kitchen is crucial to maintain the health and safety of your kitchen. The best way to clean these surfaces is with baking soda. Baking soda has been used for centuries as a natural cleanser and deodorizer. Sprinkle baking soda over the surface of the sink. Wait a minute, then use a wet cloth to scrub the sink. The baking soda will help to remove stuck on food and other stains.
To clean your oven, sprinkle the baking soda in an even coat over the entire floor of the oven. For particularly dirty ovens, you will want about a one centimeter thick layer. Wait a minute, then use a spray bottle of water to soak the baking soda. Some people will recommend using vinegar to soak the baking soda, but this can cause some fumes if you do not rinse out the oven thoroughly. Either way, let the mixture sit in the oven (with the oven turned off) for at least an hour. Leaving it overnight is best. When you’re ready, just use a cloth to wipe off all of the dried baking soda. If there is any white residue remaining in the oven, use a damp cloth to wipe it off.
It is important to note, however, that baking soda will not kill any bacteria living in your sink, oven, or cutting boards. Because of this, it is important to follow up a cleaning with baking soda with a quick antibacterial spray.
Drain Cleaner
After cleaning the sink, you will next need to keep your kitchen drains clear of any clogs. Fortunately, there are several good recipes for green drain cleaners. These cleaners are much safer than many store brands, and they are cheaper to make as well. These recipes should be mixed in a gallon jug.
Vinegar and Water
Start pouring enough vinegar into the jug to fill it half way. Then, fill the jug the rest of the way with water. Pour the entire mixture down a blocked or clogged drain, then wait about fifteen minutes. This formula is best for cleaning out small blockages that can slow down a drain. If it doesn’t work, try the next formula.
Corn Syrup, Lemon Juice, and Rubbing Alcohol
Mix together two tablespoons of clear corn syrup, one quarter cup of lemon or lime juice, and two cups of rubbing alcohol. Mix these ingredients well (until it is all one consistency), then pour the entire solution into a one gallon jug. Fill the jug up the rest of the way with very hot water. Immediately pour the entire mixture down the clogged drain. The rubbing alcohol will sterilize the drain and break down the clog. The syrup thickens the solution so that it can grab onto the clog, and the lemon or lime juice will dissolve the remaining material and cover the smell of the alcohol.
Floor Cleaner
A good floor cleaner is a necessary to keep any kitchen clean. While some people use the antibacterial spray recipes listed above, this can get expensive for a large floor. Instead, try these recipes for green floor cleaner.
Vinegar and Lemon Juice
Mix two cups of vinegar and half a cup of lemon juice into a two gallon bucket. Fill the bucket the rest of the way with warm water. Use this mixture as a weekly floor rinse. It works well on linoleum and tile floors.
Green cleaning doesn’t really require special ingredients, and most people who use these recipes do it because they want to save money. Nonetheless, green cleaning is a better way to clean a kitchen.
