Spring is finally here and many people are starting to get their gardens ready for the season. In Canada, most people wait until the May 24 weekend before replanting flowers they buy at their local garden centres. One thing that is often overlooked in the planning of a garden is the grass. Other than mowing it once in a while and throwing some fertilizer on it, the lawn in not treated as an equal partner in the garden.
However, a beautiful, green lawn is something we all like to see. There are several tips for making your grass green.
After you mow the lawn, don’t rake the clippings. Leaving the clippings on the grass adds nitrogen to the soil and stimulates the earthworms to do their thing.
Don’t cut your grass too short, aim for grass length of 3 or 4 inches. This will help the grass to absorb more sun, it will make weeds less likely to grow, and it will conserve moisture in the soil longer.
Use a manual lawn mower, this is easier on the grass and it will provide great exercise for whoever is lucky enough to mow the lawn.
Water the lawn in the evening or in the early morning when the ground will absorb the liquid easier. Also, harvest rainwater in a barrel that can be used to water your lawn.
Use vegetable and other food scrap compost to fertilize your lawn. Avoid pesticides.
