Hoppy beer lovers, it is the day all have been waiting for. San Diego, California’s Green Flash Brewing Company has apparently entered the Florida Market and will be having an official Roll Out Party on Friday, February 10th, according to the Pour House’s Facebook Page. The party will begin at 7pm and will feature other California Breweries as well, as Pour House is calling this night “California Beer Night.”
Green Flash Brewing was founded in San Diego, California in 2002 by Mike and Lisa Hinkley. In 2004, current brewmaster, Chuck Silva, joined the team. According to their website, Green Flash specializes in “assertive and distinctive beers, such as West Coast India Pale Ale, an award-winning beer whose wide acceptance has helped define the category.” Their beers, like Palate Wrecker, Hop Head Red, Le Freak, and West Coast India Pale Ale all showcase the assertive side of hop character in a beer.
The West Coast style of IPA is known for its assertive hop character and lighter malt character that effectively gives a beer’s hops a chance to shine without some of the flavor from a malt backbone. This is opposed to the so-called East Coast style of IPA, where the malt and hops of an IPA are more balanced, so both malt and hops are assertive together. Some in the beer community feel that more hops and less malt are preferable, and since the style originated in California and spread from there, the name stuck. The West Coast’s brewing style is dominant on its namesake coast, and has been gaining in popularity as hop-dominant beers have spread in distribution from that coast and “hop heads” have increased their thirst for hops. Anyone who enjoys an IPA will likely have a preference, and Green Flash’s beers are as “West Coast” as the Pacific Ocean.
No further details on the availability of Green Flash’s beers are available, but bottles will presumably follow draft releases into the Tampa and Florida markets.
For those about to drink hops, we salute you. Welcome to Florida, Green Flash.
