Green Festival at Navy Pier in Chicago this weekend

The weather may be taking a turn for the worse this weekend, cooling off with rain forecasted. Since you probably won't be able to get out to work in your garden, how about heading out to a place where you can learn more about gardening? The Green Festival will cover many "green" topics including some that will benefit those with a green thumb.

When: Saturday, May 14th 10am - 7pm and Sunday, May 15th 11am - 6pm

1:30 pm Stephanie Davies (Urban Worm Girl) – “Composting Inside and Out”

Topic: Healthy foods that we should be eating are what worms enjoy best. The worms in turn produce "Plant Candy" fertilizer. Davis will demonstrate the process from beginning to end, including planting seeds using "Plant Candy." The process of recycling is simple. Clarifying this seemingly complex process motivates and engages people to become better environmental stewards.

2:30 pm Mary Krystinak (Mary's Wholesome Living) – “An Introduction to Canning – Dill Pickles in an Hour”

Topic: Learn to make the most of all the succulent produce from the farmers market or your own garden. Canning is an easy to learn method that is sustainable, fun and does not require elaborate equipment. Join Mary for an introduction to the tradition of canning that includes hands-on demonstrations, step-by-step instructions and samples of various types of pickles.

Helen Cameron (Uncommon Ground), Rob Gardner (Local Beet), Suzanee Keers (Local First Chicago), Jim Slam (Family Farmed)  Topic: Local food has been in the news lately, but what can you do to get more local food onto your family’s table?  This panel will discuss the importance of local food and the efforts in Chicago and across Illinois to stimulate local food system.  In addition, these experts will share tips on where to find local food including CSAs, Farmers Markets and home delivery.
