We are still in the middle of winter, but tomorrow is Groundhog Day, and everyone is certainly hoping that spring is just around the corner. It's not too early to think about spring and all of the gardening that will take place. Children love to dig in the dirt and learn about plants. Gardening can introduce early skills in sorting and categorizing, discovery of similarities and differences, and a variety of activities for learning about nature.
Selby Gardens in Sarasota offers new opportunities for children to explore plants and nature with its beautifully planned children's area. The Rainforest Garden, a new garden feature, has been designed especially for children with developmentally appropriate activities and areas for play and learning. All of the activities are hands-on learning and play activities. The Rainforest Garden area is divided into three learning clubs with each designed for three age groups. The Little Sprouts Club offers activities for preschool children along with a parent or other adult companion. Rainforest Friends offers monthly activities and programming for ages 6-11. The Just Because programming group is designed for kids of all ages.
The Rainforest Garden is divided into sections with a different attraction in each section. The Waterfall teaches about the water cycle. The Forest Pool is an area for rainforest plants and gives children an opportunity to learn how water helps plants to grow. Children can walk among the tree tops on the Canopy Walk and Rope Bridge. The bridge walk is 27" high, and designed for a fun view over the entire garden area. The Village Shelter offers tables for group instruction for interesting learning activities centered around plants. Children can participate in interactive learning activities in the Research Station, and the Rainforest Village offers special exhibits.
The Little Sprouts Club at Selby Gardens is hosting activities for children ages 5 and under on February 4, 5 and 8th from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.. Games and crafts centered around the rainforest and plants will be a part of the fun. Parents may call 941-266-5731, ext. 239 for information.
