Green clothing options #1 - Recycling your old clothes

Insulation from recycled denim

Wearing "green" doesn't mean it's St. Patrick's Day.  In the eco-conscious climate that we are now thankfully in, green in clothing means that the consumer is thinking about the materials and processes that went into the manufacture of the clothes he or she wears and acting responsibly upon the information.

Over the next week or so, we are going to go through a few of the options the frugal and environmentally aware person has available.

First up is what to do with the clothes that we don't wear any more.  According to the Environmental Protection Agency 4.7 percent of waste sent to municipal landfills is textiles.

Many of us recycle our clothes without thinking about it.  Every time we pass on our clothes to relatives, from an older brother to a younger one, or when we cut up an old shirt to use as a rag, we are recycling.  But these methods will old take care of some of our clothes.  What other options are there?

  1. Donation - This can be Salvation Army, Goodwill, your local church or school for rummage sales, shelters, etc.  Or through groups like Freecycle.
  2. Denim recycling drives - Denim jeans are being used to make insulation by several non-profits including From Blue to Green and Habitat for Humanity in conjunction with Chandler-based company Bonded Logic.
  3. Consignment stores, garage sales, eBay, craigslist - Retro clothing is always "in" for someone.

The next article in our series on Green Clothing Options will be the flip-side of donation ... buying used clothing.
