Green BEAN Delivery, an online home delivery service that provides organic produce and natural groceries to members in the Midwest, announced today that it is donating 1.8 tons of canned goods and fresh produce to Mid-Ohio Foodbank.
In November, Green BEAN Delivery kicked off its annual Constant Canned Food Drive by asking members to place non-perishable food items in their delivery bins to be picked up and dropped off at Mid-Ohio Foodbank. The company pledged to match every pound donated through December 31 with donations of fresh produce.
“Fresh foods make up nearly half of what our Foodbank distributes, and a majority of that food is fresh produce,” said Matt Habash, president and CEO of Mid-Ohio Foodbank. “Green BEAN Delivery’s partnership with its customers and WCBE to bring in fresh, nutritious food is a great example of the commitment to community that it takes to end hunger for thousands of our hungry neighbors every day.”
During a fund drive with Columbus public radio station WCBE, which ran from November 23 to December 31, Green BEAN Delivery committed to match every pledge from members of the community with two pounds of fresh produce and four pounds during select times. The initiative resulted in more than 800 pledges, and 2,190 pounds of fresh produce that will be donated to the Mid-Ohio Foodbank.
As a result of Green BEAN Delivery’s Constant Canned Food Drive and support of WCBE’s winter fundraising campaign, 1,800 pounds of canned goods and 4,000 pounds of fresh produce are being donated to those in need.
“Thanks to the generosity and compassion of our members and partners, we were able to donate 6,710 pounds of food to local food banks in four cities during our holiday Constant Canned Food Drive initiative in 2011,” said Matt Ewer, president and co-founder of Green BEAN Delivery. “In 2012, we nearly tripled our donations, to nearly 17,000 pounds, and we couldn’t be more pleased. We’re extremely proud of our members who celebrated the true spirit of the holidays by giving back.”
The Mid-Ohio Foodbank strives for a hunger-free, healthier community by promoting quality, people, stewardship, diversity, and integrity. Since 1980, the organization has been working with grocers, food companies, Ohio farmers, the USDA, and community partners to obtain food and distribute it to more than 550 organizations in need across central and eastern Ohio.
Since its inception, Green BEAN Delivery has invested more than $5 million into local food economies throughout the Midwest. The company is now serving more than 12,000 customers in Indianapolis and Fort Wayne, Indiana; Cincinnati, Columbus and Dayton, Ohio; and Louisville, Kentucky. The company also recently expanded to Lexington, Kentucky and St. Louis. To date, Green BEAN Delivery has donated more than 240,000 pounds, more than 120 tons, of fresh produce to hunger relief agencies in these states.
Husband and wife team Matt Ewer and Elizabeth Blessing founded Green BEAN Delivery in 2007 to make organic produce and natural groceries convenient, affordable, and accessible to Midwest communities. Focused on home delivery, the company distributes organic, local and sustainably grown foods directly to consumers’ doorsteps.
