Green alternatives to plastic gift cards

Gift cards, during the holiday shopping season, are some of the most purchased and given items. In fact, nearly $30 billion will be spent and over 33 billion cards will be handed out. The problem with this is that the many of the cards contain polyvinyl chloride (PVC), an additive in plastic that is slow to decompose and very harmful to the environment.

PVC is also found in hotel card keys and credit cards, most of these will end up in landfills, once disregarded. In an effort to reduce plastic waste many retailers are looking for a green alternative.

Sustainable Cards, based in Colorado, provides a card that can be composted, while using 30% less energy to produce. The cards are made with wood and other types of biodegradable materials.

Normally a plastic card cost about 7 to 10 cents to produce, the Sustainable cards cost in the range of 10 to 15 cents.

Whole Food Markets, previously, did away with plastic cards and replaced them with paper. The company is also looking into having Sustainable Cards provide them with a better alternative card. Meanwhile, Target who was using another company to produce a wood card, but no longer found that cost effective, is working with Sustainable is produce a more reasonably price card.
