Souvlaki with Greek Salad
The Athenian is a quaint joy that promotes old-fashioned Greek fare at reasonable prices. I was pleasantly surprised to discover this family-owned restaurant here in Ogden. The restaurant is intimate, especially if you choose a corner table in the back where you are less likely to be bothered.
Traditional Greek food favorites are Pastitsio (similar to lasagna), Spanakopita (spinach pie--like quiche without the egg), Lemon Roasted Chicken, and Moussaka (eggplant lasagna without the noodles). Each time I dig in to one of these mainstays I an reminded of the spectacular Greek restaurants in Chicago. The Athenian stands up to the classics I'm familiar with in a lovely setting.
Having been here at least 4 times, I have experienced both good and bad service. I believe the service in the front of the restaurant is slightly better because it is closer to the kitchen. Dining al fresco one night was pleasant but it took forever to have our water refilled and to get the check long after we had finished eating.
On the last visit I tried a fried apple tart that was absolutely amazing. Warm honey drizzled with cinnamon and sugar (like many Greek pastries) over hot apples make this pastry puff memorable. I admit I have not tried the Baklava (usually too sweet for me) but will put that on my agenda the next time I go.
The Athenian is family-friendly but not for everyone. We overheard complaints about not having enough goat cheese in a salad on one visit. Another experience indicated that the restaurant does not offer vegetarian food for true vegetarians, although I can think of a few dishes (like Spanakopita) that are vegetarian.
The Athenian is located at 252 25th Street in Historic Downtown Ogden. Phone is
