Greece: The island of Mykonos (Aegean Sea)

In 2010, Las Vegas was ranked #23 on a list of cities with the most Greek people by StatJump.com.   Hearing stories of Greece by locals and then visiting the infamous Greek isles, you appreciate how this beautiful island chain transcends many others throughout the world.  One of the main islands is the remarkable Mykonos.  Situated in an island chain known as the Cyclades, southeast of Tinos, Mykonos was once a favored shopping destination for Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.  The area named, “Little Venice,” for its winding passage ways, is lined with a variety of shops from the ultra exclusive to the charming local craft boutiques.

You will also find many restaurants to try local seafood and Greek dishes.  The movie, Shirley Valentine, highlighted some local delights including calamari. One such restaurant featuring a casual, comfortable relaxed atmosphere with a variety of cuisine and fresh seafood, not to mention a great view, is Katerinas.   Conveniently located in Little Venice, mussels are one of their specialties.  Also enjoy a local’s aperitif that is served (they serve an alternative, to the normally served ouzo, that is sweet and refreshing).   We will keep that as a surprise!

For a fascinating archaeological site, you will want to catch a short two mile boat ride right from the pier in Mykonos to Delos island, the birthplace of Artemis and Apollo, children of Zeus.  The remains found at Delos’ Mount Kinthos show that the island has been inhabited since the Bronze Age of 3000 BC and 2500 BC. Originally named Ortygia, translated to Quail Island, Delos was a key religious center and industrious port of ancient times.

How do you get there?  Flights depart from all major U.S. cities daily via Athens, Greece, to the local airport of Mykonos
(JMK) located in the small town of Chora which is about 3 miles from Mykonos.  A convenient way to visit is by cruise ship
and allows you to bring your hotel with you. Weekly cruises and daily ferries depart from Athens sailing the Greek
islands regularly.  Cruises are extremely reasonable compared to land resorts, including air, transfers, food, accommodation and onboard entertainment.  Yamas, that is, “To your health!”
