Trailing 57-52 at the end of three quarters, Greece outscored Spain 27-18 in the fourth to gain an important win. With the loss, Spain is in jeopardy of being ousted from the tournament.
Greece trailed 26-16 at the end of the first quarter but they took advantage of Spain being without Gasol in the second period and grabbed a 41-38 halftime lead. Gasol picked up his third foul towards the end of the first quarter and sat out the entire second period.
Gasol returned in the third and Spain was a much different team. Spain, which kept Greece scoreless the first 4:40 seconds of the quarter, opened up the quarter on a 6-0 run. Rudy Fernandez scored four points and Victor Claver had the other bucket during the mini-run. After Georgios Printezis tied the game at 48, the game became the Marc Gasol show. Gasol scored Spain’s final 11 points of the quarter.
Fernandez opened the scoring of the final stanza with a triple to put Spain up 60-52. After Greece tied the game at 64-64, Yannis Bourousis put the Greeks ahead 66-64 with two free throws at the 4:09 mark. Bourousis then returned to the defensive end and blocked a Sergio Rodriguez lay-up. On the next Greek possession, Bourousis scored down low to make 68-64 with 3:31 on the clock.
Greece and Spain are both 1-2 in Group F with two games remaining.
Italy, Slovenia and Croatia are all sitting ahead of Spain and Greece with a 2-1 record.
