When this match happened in 2001, both men were huge draws and were truly 1 and 1-A in the WWE pecking order. The atmosphere was off the charts as Austin was coming off his big return late 2000 and winning the 2001 Royal Rumble. Meanwhile, The Rock was coming off regaining the WWE Championship from Kurt Angle at the 2001 No Way Out event and carrying the company as the top face in Austin’s absence. After a number of near falls, Austin picked up the pin fall win with the help of Vince McMahon, turning Austin heel for the first time since 1997.
