Over the next few months, I will run through the Top 50 matches in Wrestle Mania history (in my humble opinion) as the 29th edition of the event takes place on Apr. 7, live from MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Today, we look at the match that comes in at No. 25
#25, WWE Champion Shawn Michaels vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin with Mike Tyson as the guest referee —Wrestle Mania 14 (1998)—Boston, Massachusetts
(Ranked the best match from Wrestle Mania 14)
The match was very good (and would have been even better had HBK been healthy) but this ranking here is based more on what this match meant as the infamous ‘Attitude Era’ was officially born. Michaels was on his way out after this match after injuring his back severely at the 1998 Royal Rumble in a Casket Match against The Undertaker while Austin’s popularity was soaring after winning his second straight Rumble match. Tyson was aligned with Michaels, Triple H and Chyna heading into the bout but ended up counting the 1-2-3 as Austin won his first WWE Championship. After the match, Michaels questioned Tyson, only to be laid out by a thunderous punch.
