Greater Washington Soap Box Derby planned for June 15 (Video)

The 72nd running of the Greater Washington Soap Box Derby is slated for Saturday, June 15 at the Capitol grounds in Washington, DC. The event is free and open to the public.

As the Greater Washington Soap Box Derby Association puts it, “some hills are higher, some hills are longer, some are faster; but we race on THE most powerful hill in the world, Capitol Hill!” Details are yet to be announced but you can keep up to date at http://www.facebook.com/GWSBD and at http://www.dcsoapboxderby.org/.

The event still needs congressional approval, which is routinely granted each year. Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD) introduced H. Con. Res. 19, which would grant the necessary permit. The resolution was referred to the Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure. Seven members of Congress from the area cosponsored it.

You can read the resolution at http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c113:H.CON.RES.19:.

The resolution calls for Capitol police enforcement but no federal money for the event.
