Great women's travel clothing sites for Baby Boomer Chicks

Travel Dress photo:MyShape.com

Boomer women need to find travel wear that works double duty and has comfortable stretch. And, women who've been around the block (and back) know that it can be a real trick to put together a flattering outfit without going broke.  Here are a few suggestions for Boomer friendly websites:

The last thing Boomer chicks want is tacky polyester granny clothes or mom jeans, but well... that’s what fits. So, I say that if a gal works at it she can use the new synthetic fabrics in ways that make a traveling gypsy look hip or a touring preppie look smart.

Travel Smith:

I prefer the long gauzy boho styles of my youth, but other gals may like more classic shapes, so look around these sites for good options.

For me, TravelSmith.com is the best place for dresses when I need something and time is short. Travel Smith carries some great dresses, which have sizes, but act more like one-size-fits-all because they stretch and have no waist. I buy these garments in almost every color available and wear them with everything in my closet or my accessory drawer.

I think that the longer mid calf styles work well for a boho look. (The knee length styles would be better for preppie gals.) Also, I mix a lot of colors together, so I find a way to make any color work with almost anything else in my ecclectic closet. If every color is a color I like, it’s my color, and I find a way to make it go together with other pieces. (Matching the colors is too much work for me.)

Dresses vs Pants:

Why do I like dresses more than pants? Well, it’s because pants have a waistband. Think about that for a second. Travel Smith dresses (without waists) are like wearing pajamas. And, with my funky freshwater pearl “love beads”, I feel like a hippie gypsy once again.

Other good ideas at TS:  Lightweight gauzy wraps, wrap dresses, and cheap 3 piece travel outfits.

Do tart up these inexpensive 3 piece outfits with jewelry or scarves when in Europe. Although, wearing anything other than jogging suits with white tennis shoes is an improvement over what most Americans wear, do your best. (Save the jog suits for cruises or vacays to China.)

My Shape:

MyShape.com has incredible travel wear, but it’s not specifically labeled as travel clothing. Lots of items on My Shape work well for preppies.  Just look on this website for something with stretch or any light weight coat. I got my Mycra Pac coat here (years ago) and I wear it almost every day in Seattle. It wasn’t cheap, but it was one of my best investments.

When considering an expensive purchase, think about how many times you might wear the item. For example, if I bought a jacket for $350 and I wore it almost every day for a year, I’ve only paid a dollar a day. Hopefully, I would continue to wear the piece for years and the cost would average down to 25 cents a day.

Nordstrom:

Another Mycra Pac style that I have is the Donatella from Nordstrom. I bought mine in their Bellevue Washington store, but Nordstrom.com has similar styles online. My coat is reversible and has a cowl neckline, which can be pulled up like a hood on rainy days.

Look around for Mycra Pac on other websites to see what the prices are. You can, however, trust Nordstrom's for great raincoats. It’s a Seattle company and I’ve been shopping there since Nordstrom was a little shoe store.

QVC:

The one thing I find indispensible from QVC is their great wrinkle-free Citiknits pants. Get them in black because the other colors are shiny and show every bulge. I’ve worn these pants on a grueling flight to Auckland NZ and on the grueling flight back from Brisbane OZ. (By the way, NZ and OZ are so fabulous that it’s worth the horrid flight.)  Get the pull on pants and don't buy cropped ones unless you are truly desperate.

I recommend the black but not the brownish color. The lighter colors really look like granny pants. (Great when little grandchildren visit, but not apropos for Frisco or Paris.)

Sun Precautions and Travel Hats:

Some of the best hats in the world are from LouiseGreen.com, however, most Louise Green styles are a pain to tote around because they require a hatbox. I am, of course, talking about long distance flights not weekend car trips, when I can throw several hatboxes in the trunk.

SunPrecautions.com has my favorite fabric sun hat in several colors. I also like the Dorfman-Pacific Scala hats, though they have no chin strap. For a rain hat, the most practical and cute (when you wear one side down like an Aussie) is the Seattle Sombrero at REI.com.
