The premiere indoor water park resort, Great Wolf Lodge, is bringing a new interactive game to many of its locations. Over the weekend, Shadow Quest opened at the Williamsburg, Virginia branch. My family adores Great Wolf Lodge so we jumped at the chance to try out the new game and spend a few hours slipping and sliding around the water park.
The goal in Shadow Quest is to save the light before it vanishes forever. After purchasing a wand, you will be given a Shadow Quest Guide Book that has all of the rhyming clues and descriptions you need to complete your journey.
Here is a sample clue ... "Three broken portals are what you next seek / A magical place is where you should peek / Look in the Sea, Swamp, and Mountains so tall / You will be finished when you have them all / Don't get tangled looking for your friend, who's a hoot / She will be standing by to give you your loot."
The main characters in Shadow Quest include Lumina, Ivan and Malaki. Lumina is the leader of the Light Pixies. She is brave and will do anything to help protect her friends. Ivan is a famous runemaster yeti. He is kind and trustworthy, and can give the Magi a winning edge in a challenge. Malaki is the bad guy of the group. He is an egotistical yeti. He was once a student of Ivan, but was forced to flee through a portal into the darkness by Ivan and the Kingbreakers after an epic dual. The Magi (that would be you, the player) must win the battle against Malaki to save the light.
With the help of Lumina and Ivan, guests have to collect runes and crystals, conquer magical quests and battle dark world creatures to save the light. As each goal is completed, the quests get harder. Towards the end, there are also time restrictions. I saw several Magi practically flying around the resort to complete their quests in time. If all of the goals are completed, you will receive the Medal of Light.
We had a lot of fun learning the ins and outs of Shadow Quest. It would be great to have a tutorial that gives an explanation of some of the finer points of the game – as there is for Magi Quest. I understand that there will eventually be one.
I do recommend Shadow Quest for older kids, or as the next step up after mastering Magi Quest and Compass Quest, which is simply additional quests added on to Magi Quest. My nine-year-old got a little frustrated at the difficulty of the clues. You really have to read carefully and be able to decipher what each rhyme means. I noticed several teen-aged Magi effortlessly walking around and flicking their wands with correct results.
If you do need to take a break from all of the magical traveling, go right ahead. Float around the lazy river, splash down a couple of slides or play a game of ten pin bowling. The wands store the game and you can pick up right where you left off. Make sure to turn the wand off so as not to wear out the batteries. There's nothing like a wand fizzling out in the middle of a quest for crystals.
Shadow Quest is an exciting take on the interactive game realm, and we enjoyed the chance to check it out. Thank you Great Wolf Lodge Williamburg! We will be back to complete our mission.
