FRIDAY SIPS, THE ALPHABET OF WINE GRAPES
Today, Friday July 16, 3:30 - 6:30
Something a bit different for Friday Sips and something we're extremely excited about!!!
Recently we picked up Jancis Robinson's book entitled "Wine Grapes" which delves deeply into the history and DNA of over 1300 grapes utilized for the wines of the world. With an inspiration from a friend from New Zealand, we will dedicate monthly, one of our Friday Sips Tastings to exploring, A-through-Z (well, 2 letters are probably unobtainable) wines and the grapes they come from. This week we'll kick it off with grapes starting with the letters A, B, C & D. Read through these to the bottom, very interesting indeed!

Villa Sparina Gavi 2011 $16.99
Made from the Cortese grape, this classic Gavi has a pale straw golden color with a floral nose and hints of peach fragrances. It has a wonderful peach and pear and lemony citrus flavors with hints of wet stone and a long finish.
Villa des Anges Old Vines Rose 2012 $8.99
A light bodied wine, intensely crisp and vividly fresh, it offers complex aromas of strawberries and red currants, with a hint of quince.
Neyers Chardonnay Carneros 2012 $31.99
The finished wine has a rich, almost creamy texture, with a lovely aroma of grilled bread and tropical fruit.
Villa des Anges 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon $9.99
A wine of great freshness, intensity and concentration.Well-structured, offering aromas of black cherries, with hints of red pepper and light, spicy cumin/coriander notes.
Ontanon Teon Roble 2010 $11.99
From the Ribera de Duero region of Spain. Made from Tempranillo. Floral aromas on the nose combine with black fruit, berries and notes of thyme on the palate that finish with a subtle hint of toast and significant minerality. Smooth, delicate and bright with freshness as well as weight.
Neyers Zinfandel Del Barba Vineyard 2011 $34.99
In a recent New York Times review, Eric Asimov referred to our Del Barba Zinfandel as a wine with ‘freshness, energy and balance’. He rated it among the top ten of the scores of wines he tasted for the article. In last month’s San Francisco Chronicle, Jon Bonné called our Del Barba Zinfandel ‘…an aromatic, food-loving Zinfandel style that balances brawn and finesse’, naming it one of the Top 100 wines of the year. Balance is especially important in Zinfandel, and here we retain the natural flavor of the grape. The wine remains refreshing yet loaded with flavor.

“The one tasting where I can gather all those stray wines that have been most deserving of your glasses but haven’t been slotted in to a regular flight. Neglected wines will have their day tomorrow. Plus it is always a rather interesting exercise to take five like priced wines and let you compare and contrast. From the feedback I get it seems most of you agree that when we pull this one off two or three times a year it is one of the best tastings we do… A new vintage of a favorite Rioja that surpasses any previous effort from this great producer; a newly price-reduced Portuguese red that was just brought to my attention yesterday that I LOVED; a revisit to one of the past few months favorite Barberas that seems to just keep getting better; plus more deliciousness to be had. You’ll want to make plans to visit the land of affordable liquid tomorrow at VINO, because this is an exciting lineup of reds….”
2011 PASCAL AUFRANC Julienas “Les Cerisiers” (France) $14.95
-2011 PICO MACCARIO Barbera d’Asti (Italy) $14.95
-2010 MARTINEZ-ALESANCO Rioja Crianza (Spain) $13.95
-2009 CASA SANTOS LIMA Touriga Naçional (Portugal) $15.95
-2010 GIANT WINE CO. “The Ghost in the Machine” Columbia Vly. Red (Wash.) $16.95
And then we bonus pour our way through The World’s Greatest $20, $25, and $49.95 Red Wines…
-2009 PARDAS Negre Franc (Spain) $20.95…a very interesting and well done blend of 60% cab franc, 20% cab sauv, and 20% sumoll (yeah, that was new to me, too). New favorite here!
-2006 UGO LEQUIO Barbaresco “Gallina” (Italy) $25.95…we’ve featured this unbelievably well priced single vineyard closeout deal before, but now the distributor is almost out and you need to try it one last time so you can marvel at its goodness!
-2009 LONGSHADOWS COLLECTION Syrah “Sequel” (Washington) $49.95…Just found out this morning the new vintage is here and now we must try. Made by John Duval, the Aussie genius behind the legendary Penfolds Grange Hermitage. 93 pts-Wine Advocate; 92 pts-Wine Spectator
