On Saturday, January 26, 2013 the Honda Battle of the Bands will take control of the Georgia Dome. For those unfamiliar with this event, the Honda Battle of the Bands is a competition for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) to showcase the talent of their bands. The event is in its 11th year and is an awesome opportunity for the competing HBCU bands to earn grants as well as the bragging rights of being the best of the competition.
The competing HBCU Bands this year are: North Carolina A&T, Bethune-Cookman, Winston Salem State, Jackson State, Alcorn State, Tennessee State, Albany State, and Edward Waters. These 8 phenomenal bands have earned the privilege of being in the final stage of competition for the invitational showcase. Along with the competing bands, the guest performer this year will be R&B recording artist Brandy.
As a bonus to the competition, there will be a HBCU recruitment fair in the Georgia World Congress Center that morning from 10 am until 2 pm. This will be a wonderful opportunity for students and parents to learn about the colleges and universities, their admissions process, and scholarship information. Also, it is a chance to learn about the unique learning and cultural experiences provided at HBCUs.
Saturday’s event will be a wonderful opportunity for your teen to experience a small portion of the wonderful experiences encountered at a HBCU. I strongly encourage you to consider attending with your teen and share not only in great entertainment, but valuable information for their future as well. As a proud graduate of two HBCU’s (one of the final 8, North Carolina A&T State University is one), I highly recommend this experience.
