The panel discussed the differences between two distinct growing years, 2009 and 2011. By tasting a wine from each of the vintages side by side, the winemakers were able to translate how variations on climate and soil conditions affect the vineyards and the final character of the wine. Amazing experience to taste wines from Turley (Howell Mountain Zinfandel), Carlisle (Russian River Zinfandel) and Bedrock Wine Company (Sonoma Valley Zinfandel).

The Seminar took place from 1 to 2 p.m. at The Dome (Rock Wall Winery), followed by a great tasting of over 100 Zinfandel producers at the impressive Hangar. An outstanding collection of wines from America's Heritage grape, great opportunity to meet many winemakers and learn from them on a more relaxed environment. From Quivira Vineyards and Winery (Dry Creek Valley) a trio of wines from their estate: 2011 Zinfandel, Flight and Quest, all of them with a common earthy aroma but distinctive flavors.

From Hendry (Napa Valley), Winemaker Mike Hendry shared three great examples of Napa fruit that produce unique wines: 2011 Hendry Block 28, Blocks 7 and 22 and Mike and Molly. Mike believes in letting the fruit speaks trough the vineyard and him been the facilitator for us to appreciate it. From McCay Cellars winemaker Michael McCay shared with us: "My goal is to make a Zinfandel with character, a wine that expresses the vineyard. I believe that Lodi, CA has the perfect climate for Zinfandel, heat in the summer and evenings that are cool with an average of 57 degrees at nighttime, perfect for Zinfandel. My winemaking approach is Hands on, Hands off. Hands on in the vineyard and hands off in the Winery." McCay shared various Zinfandel, very different and full of structure and character. McCay 2010 Jupiter, Equity, Trulux and Contention.

Looking forward to the ZAP Experience main event on Saturday at The Presidio Grounds, for more information or buying tickets check: ZAP Zinfandel Experience.
