Toffee bars to die for!
Labor Day is the last holiday of the summer in Michigan, and everyone comes together for one last picnic before our winter hibernation. Here is a recipe to share at your Labor Day party that will have everyone coming back to the table for one more piece.
This dessert combines the creamy deliciousness of chocolate and the rich buttery taste of toffee. If this mouth-watering idea sends you to the kitchen, the reaction of your friends, family, and guests will make it worth your effort.
Toffee Bars
½ cup butter, softened
¾ cup brown sugar
1 egg
½ tsp. vanilla
1 cup flour
1/8 tsp. salt
¾ cup chocolate chips or chopped chocolate
1/3 cup chopped chocolate-covered toffee pieces
1/3 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
Beat butter and sugar, add egg and vanilla beating well. Beat in flour and salt. Spread dough evenly in an ungreased 13x9 baking pan. Bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes or until the edges begin to brown and the surface is dry.
Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle with the chocolate chips or pieces. In a couple minutes, when the chocolate is softened, spread it evenly over the entire surface. Sprinkle with the nuts and toffee pieces. Let cool before cutting into bars.
