The Great Northern Brewery is a popular brewpub, event stage and organizer in Whitefish, Montana. The brewery is located at the Mezzanine at the Black in the heart of downtown which is pegged as the tallest building in Whitefish. It also houses the Draught House where you can enjoy your favorite Great Northern beer, wine, and sandwich. The Draught House also has a gift shop featuring a wide selection of Great Northern Brewing apparel and merchandise.
Established in 1994 by Minott Wessinger, descendent of Henry Weinhard, the brewery was designed by world renowned architect Joe Escheric. The first brew was a Black Star Double Hopped Golden Lager. Now the brewery is known for the finest quality ales and lagers in a variety of year-round and seasonal styles. One of the secrets to the great beer is the use of a traditional “Gravity Flow” arrangement. They boast that “their beers are made in the tradition of artisan brewing with one of the most sophisticated brew houses for its size in the entire country.” The custom designed and efficient 20 barrel brew house has an impressive annual capacity of 8,000 barrels. According to the Great Northern Brewing Co. website, Wessinger chose Whitefish, Montana as the home for the Great Northern Brewery because of its rugged and beautiful surroundings, excellent water and unique history of the Flathead Valley.

The brewery is open for tours in the summer Monday thru Friday at 1 and 3 pm. Visitors of all ages are welcome. The tour wanders through the entire facility where you can learn about the system, machinery and more about the art of making beer.
