Great Lakes Cyber Academy holds its first graduation ceremony

Do you think cyber schools wouldn't interact live with their students? Think again. The inaugural year of the Great Lakes Cyber Academy included a graduation ceremony on May 18, 2014.

The event was held at the Okemos Conference Center. Well over a hundred people attended to watch the seven graduates receive the honor of being the first graduating class at GLCA. There was standing room only as Principal Heather Ballien presented the commencement address. A news crew from a local station also took notice, interviewing teachers and students about the special moment.

Students from around the state of Michigan virtually attend GLCA. They voted to establish the Eagle as the school mascot this year, participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony through a live lesson presentation, and chose the senior class song as "Best Day of My Life" by American Authors.

It is not too often that a new school begins, albeit a cyber school. The attached slideshow (see upper left of this page) illustrates some of this unique graduation ceremony.
