Great Falls officials address school safety and preparedness

In response to recent school shootings, Great Falls school district staff, law enforcement officials, and community partners met this week to discuss school safety in Great Falls.

Police officers who work within the schools say the best way to be prepared is to practice emergency drills in order to immediately respond to any type of school crisis, such as what happened in Newtown, Conn, on Dec 14, 2012.

Tom Moore, Great Falls Public Schools assistant superintendent stated, “The district has some of the best practices in place for school safety, but they want to be proactive in dealing with an ever-changing world.”

Captain Jeff Newton of the Great Falls Police Department Patrol Bureau said, “That’s something that you hope never happens in your community, what a tragic, tragic thing. You do the best you can, you prepare the best you can, you put in place policies, procedures, training and our response.”

Moore also said, “Every time one of these instances occurs, there is a massive upload of information, new information of what worked and what didn’t. And our law enforcement officials share that with us.”

According to Ruth Uecker, assistant superintendent for elementary schools in Great Falls said that the district and GFPD have been conducting emergency-response drills for the past decade to prepare for an “active shooting” scenario.

Newton also mentioned they are working with the fire department to develop a plan in the event of a mass casualty.

The first of these exercises is scheduled for this spring.

The trigger that sent off this horrible violence against the young was the influence of the Nov. 13, 2012 Solar Eclipse in Scorpio, the sign of transformation and death, and the end-of-2012 YOD pattern of crisis and turning points, which pressurized retrograde Jupiter in Gemini, the sign of young people.
