Being a single mom keeps a person very busy, especially when mom works and/or goes to school. When children go back to school things become even more hectic, making it important to do things as a family. Families need to stay open, enjoying each others company and having some fun.

This fall, look for ways to spend time together as a family. Take into consideration what each of you likes to do, and plan activities accordingly. Try to do an activity together at least once a week.

Ideas for Activities

  1. Rake the lawn. Make a pile of leaves to jump in, then rake again. Make a scarecrow to place in a chair on the front porch.

  2. Visit a pumpkin patch on a pick-your-own day. Each person can choose their own, then go to the farm stand and get a few more items to decorate the porch with. Mini pumpkins make great candle holders. Haystacks can be placed here and there in the yard, and topped with pumpkins. And cornstalks tied to porch posts is a nice touch. On the way home, pick up potted mums to place on the steps.

  3. Go apple picking, then bake an apple pie together as a family. Place some in a fruit bowl, and make some homemade applesauce. Store the rest of the apples wrapped individually in newspaper, placed in a box in a cool place. They will last quite some time.

  4. Take a day to go for a drive, stopping in a few different locations so everyone can take pictures. Pack a picnic lunch, and plenty of water.

  5. Get the best photographs developed, and shop as a family for matching frames and mats. Hang this on a prominent wall in your home.

  6. Have a family picture taken outside, with the backdrop being that of fall foliage. Give pictures to friends and family. These could be part of Christmas gift giving. Mat and frame them, and they make great stand alone gifts.

  7. Have a separate picture of each family member taken on the same day, and you could mat and frame them to match and use them as wall décor in another prominent place in your home.

  8. Buy wicks and candle jars, and spend a day making homemade candles out of candle ends with your children. These can also be used for gift giving.

  9. Visit the local craft store and buy supplies for a family crafting day. Use these crafts to decorate your home for fall.

  10. Make the Thanksgiving meal together.
