Readers, let's get busy. For 17 days, we are imagining the scenario of a major earthquake hitting Southern California on Thursday, October 17, at 10:17 a.m., when the Great California ShakeOut drill takes place. This is only a scenario of this earthquake readiness countdown series of articles on Examiner.com
Enter your comments below responding to the question: "What would you do today to get ready if you knew an actual earthquake were to occur at that time?" If your response is practical, do it today.
Next, if you haven't signed up to participate in the Great California ShakeOut, the largest earthquake drill in the world, you're missing out on a major movement afoot. Join the 8.7 million others by visiting www.shakeout.org and clicking on the orange "Register Here!" link. It only takes a moment to sign up you as an individual, or your business or organization. You can always register yourself today and worry about your family or co-workers in the coming days. But don't count yourself twice when you sign others up.
Pause now to visit www.shakeout.org to register for the earthquake drill.
All registered? Great. Now let's look at where you are right now. Are you still seated at your desk reading this on the computer or did you leave the house to go get water bottles for your car? During the drill, your task is to "Drop, Cover and Hold On." Let's return to the ShakeOut website and click on the "How to Participate" link. Read the overview about the various ways to prepare for the drill and improve your earthquake readiness.
To add special effects to make your drill as real as possible, consider downloading the audio and video broadcast recordings offered on www.shakeout.org under the "How to Participate" link. I downloaded the audio recording to my i-Phone so I can play the recording from my cell phone at the time of the drill.
Now add the event to your phone's calendar, for Thursday, October 17, at 10:17 a.m. My phone is set for 10:15 a.m. because I want to get in position with my ShakeOut recording on pause, ready to roll. Closer to the date, we'll have you also set your phone alarm clock for the exact time so there's no missing the big drill.
Return here again tomorrow for Day 2 of the Great California ShakeOut earthquake readiness countdown.
