The weather is eastern South Dakota has been quite mild. The ice is barely frozen on the Big Sioux River, and there's no snow at the Outdoor Campus for cross-country skiing. But, there is snow at Great Bear Park. Great Bear is one of those areas where you can experience downhill skiing, snowboarding and tubing. To find the park, take the Rice Street exit off of Interstate 229 and go east. The signs will guide you into the recreational area after a few miles.
There is a ski lift on the right side of Great Bear as you enter the parking lot, along with an area for snowboarding. From the Chalet there is easy access to the lift, and it’s a quick ride to the top.
On the left side of Great Bear are several tubing hills. This is the most popular with long lines waiting quite regularly.
In the middle of these two slopes is the Chalet. This is not only a great place to warm up and hangout, but it’s also used for weddings, receptions, and offsite company meetings.
Great Bear does not have the most challenging slopes for avid skiers; those are in the Black Hills. But it does give you a chance to hone your skills, or to enjoy a fun day with family and friends. The park is also open in the summer with several hiking trails that weave throughout the area.
Since weather or snow conditions can change daily, it’s always a good idea to check with Great Bear first to make sure they are open. For more information please visit: Great Bear Recreation Park.
