Today, November 19, 2009, marks the day of the Great American Smokeout Challenge. It is a day when smokers are challenged to go the whole day without smoking at all, and the hope is that those who make it through the day will be encouraged to make it a permanent change and not take up another cigarette.
The Great American Smokeout Challenge is put forth by the American Cancer Society. The website offers many great tools to help smokers quit, including a 24 hour a day "Quit Line" where smokers can sign up to be contacted by someone who will help will confirm the smoker's quit day and quit plan.
Smokers in the Denver area will be able to take advantage of another resource to help them kick the habit this weekend. On Saturday, November 21st, Allen Carr's Easyway to Stop Smoking seminar will be held at the Burnsley Hotel from 1-6.30pm. Allen Carr, now deceased, kicked his 5 pack a day chain-smoking habit and then went on to help millions kick their habit through his books and audio cds promoting his "Easyway" to quit. Prior to his passing, he established the Allen Carr clinics which are now operating in dozens of cities around the world. Registration for the seminar which costs $350 is taking place online, and there are also webcasts for those who cannot make the live event.
