Fat Heads (North Olmsted & Middleburg Heights) was the big winner for Ohio at the Great American Beer Festival (GABF). Winners were announced today, and Fat Heads was the only multiple winner for Ohio with a gold medal and two silver medals. Hop Juju won the gold in the imperial IPA category. Fat Heads also won a silver medal for Trail Head, their fresh hop ale, and for Black Knight, a German style schwarzbier.
Hoppin' Frog (Akron) won a bronze medal for their Barrel-Aged B.O.R.I.S (bodacious oatmeal Russian imperial stout) in the wood and barrel-aged strong stout category. This is a beer that has won the gold medal twice in the past before being aged.
Another repeat winner was Sam Adams Cincinnati brewery which again won a medal for their Double Bock in the German-style Dopplebock or Eisbock category. This is the second year in a row, but this time it was a gold medal. Last year was silver. The silver medal this year went to Christian Moerlein Brewery (Cincinnati) for their Emancipator Dopplebock. This was a first GABF medal for Christian Moerlein.
Also winning medals for the first time were Yellow Springs Brewery (Yellow Springs), with a silver medal for their smoke beer Smokin' Handsome, and Market Garden Brewery (Cleveland) with their Progress Pilsner in the kellerbier or zwickelbier category.
Congratulations to all! This is a record number (8) medals for Ohio at the GABF.
