The Mark Twain House & Museum located in Hartford, Connecticut will be presenting their Graveyard Shift Ghost Tours on Friday, August 22 & Saturday, August 23, 2014. The popular special event features an after dark tour from 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. of the Clemens property which will include passing through the main house, the servant’s wing, and down into the basement which is normally off-limits to visitors.
The tour will focus on haunted history, dark tales and Victorian traditions surrounding séances and spiritualism. Guests will learn many of the secrets surrounding the life of Samuel Clemens, aka Mark Twain, and some of his experiences with the supernatural world.
Many people are unaware of Clemens’ fascination with the paranormal world. He always enjoyed a good ghost story, and loved to tell them as well. He listened to the stories the slaves told when he visited his uncle’s farm as a boy. He ventured into old graveyards where he reported seeing ghosts or translucent spirits from beyond the grave.
The Mark Twin House is where the renowned author lived with his wife and three daughters from 1874 to 1891. It is there Clemens wrote “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”, “Huckleberry Finn”, and a “Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court” and other classic works. The family sold the home in 1896 after the death of Clemons young daughter Susy. It later became a boarding school and library before it was turned into a museum dedicated to the life and career of Samuel Clemens.
There have been many reports of employees and visitors encountering the apparition of a young woman in a long white dress drifting down the hallways. Some claim to have seen faces in the windows, while others have had their clothing tugged by unseen hands. Guests and employees have heard laughter, whispers, and other unexplained conversations.
The Graveyard Shift Ghost Tours comes just in time for some summer thrills and chills. The historic Mark Twain House has been featured on TV programs such as Syfy Channel’s “Ghost Hunters” and the Biography Channel’s “My Ghost Story.” The tour participants will hear about the results of these investigations, and explore Mark Twain’s own interest in the supernatural. After the tour, be sure and pick up a copy of “We Shall Have Them with Us Always: The Ghosts of the Mark Twain House” which features more tales of the mansion’s haunted history. The book is available at the museum’s gift shop.
The Graveyard Shift Ghost Tours will sell out fast, so be sure to make your reservations.
