Grassley on gunwalker--"there's something sinister going on"

In an interview with Greta Van Susteren on Fox News Monday evening, the contents of which is reported today by Seattle Gun Rights Examiner Dave Workman, Senator Charles Grassley stated with regard to the Gunwalker scandal,

There’s something sinister going on...They want to do everything they can to avoid this issue. They want to string us along. They want to stonewall us.

Grassley, R-Iowa, has been the point man in the U.S. Senate for the investigation into the Project Gunwalker scandal, also known as Operation Fast and Furious. Although Grassley's efforts have fallen on deaf ears given that the Senate is controlled by members of the Administration's own Party, that may be about to change, as reported in this breaking news article last evening.

The Senator was unusually candid regarding the frustration he feels after months of receiving no cooperation whatsoever from the White House, the Justice Department, or Senate Democrats. When he asked the Justice Department back in February, for example, if the agency was allowing U.S. guns to cross the Mexican border where drug cartels used them to commit crimes, he was told, flatly, "No."

That brought the following response by Grassley during the Van Susteren interview Monday night:

“It’s a lie.”

As proof, Grassley referenced a letter he received from Assistant Attorney-General Ronald Welch, dated February 4, 2011:

“At the outset, the allegation described in your January 27 letter – that ATF “sanctioned” or otherwise knowingly allowed the sale of assault weapons to a straw purchaser who then transported them into Mexico – is false.”

It is now known that internal ATF-DOJ emails, memos, and letters, all of which corroborate the allegations of the original whistleblowers, depict a mammoth operation to deliberately place U.S. firearms into the hands of drug cartels, not as part of a so-called 'botched' sting operation but as a criminal enterprise designed for purely poliltical purposes.

Further, Grassley charges that the Department of Justice has been stringing him along from the beginning, issuing denials and deflections, and engaging in unnecessary delays and outright stonewalling.

Attorney-General Eric Holder had promised Grassley full cooperation in his investigation if Grassley would lift his block on an Obama appointee at the DOJ. Holder has yet to keep his promise, according to Grassley.

The illegal operation resulted in the deaths of at least 400 Mexican citizens and the death of U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry. The guns from the operation have also been found at at least a dozen crime scenes within the U.S.
