Ever watch a horse race? Have you ever wondered what happens to them when they are not in their prime? Where they go when they cannot perform on the track? Some end up at the end of their rope, some off to the glue factory but there is such a better alternative that more and more racehorse owners are looking towards. These new chances are organizations like Thoroughbred Placement and Rescue that take the racehorse and place them in new appropriate homes for pleasure horses or for show horses. The Thoroughbred Placement and Rescue is a non-profit organization that steps in and helps give these beautiful horses a second chance.
There was a horse named “Doodles” that was in racing but not in the top races. He was only five years old and in his prime. After the trainer decided he was not making it as a racer he called the Thoroughbred Placement and Rescue and had them take Doodles. Since the cost of a racehorse that does not perform well is very expensive, they are trying to offload them earlier than before due to the economy. The Thoroughbred Placement and Rescue then placed Doodles in a home with Kimberly Clark. There Doodles will be able to live out the rest of his life in a great home and have plenty of exercise and companionship.
The Thoroughbred Placement and Rescue has only been operating since November 2007 but they have already placed 250 horses. Most of these horses were just placed in homes and not for a fee. These were just given away to the appropriate family. Others were sold for under $5000.00 which is far less that what you would expect for a racehorse. These horses are being turned over when they are five or six years old and even older but they still have their whole life ahead of them. This way they have a chance at a life they may not have even known thanks to the Thoroughbred Placement and Rescue.

I think this is a wonderful program. The owners, trainers etc. do lose money if they dont have a winner, however, the difference today is that instead of going to slaughter, they can live out full, healthy, happy, useful lives. I love what programs we have come up in todays society to help these otherwise 'useless' animals. I know some racetracks that will refuse to issue stalls etc. to known owners, trainers like this. Good for us!! It's about time we took a stand. I myself have a perfectly good Thoroughbred off the racetrack. Today he is still going strong at 18 years old and my best friend. We have to realize that there are other alternatives to these 'unwanted horses'. They can live out perfectly good, productive lives in other places aside from the racetrack.
Thank you Kym for commenting. I ran across this place and just had to write about it and let people know there are places like this out there. It is so hard to hear about slaughters and such and that they are trying to bring them back, but to know places like this exist so the horses can live and live peaceful at someones home is great.
