If the world is really going to end in 2012 then there's only a couple years to read some of the best comic collections out there! Starting off this list of must-haves is the infinitely excellent, Y: The Last Man. This series about a male killing gendercide is so engaging you can literally pick it up from almost any point and get attached to the characters. Brian K Vaughn unleashes an intricate and ensnaring story that when set against Pia Guerra's art literally jumps off the pages. Its incredible how one writer can so easily become so many different  and well rounded characters, from Yorick's loveable awkwardness to 355's badass-ness and surprising character depth . . .even the monkey has some awesome character moments! This is one collection that begs to be read and never disappoints.
