While Grapevine's Mike Fagan put himself in a position to win two recent events in different parts of the world, he wasn't able to complete the deal in either case.
The Dallas-Fort Worth-area newcomer finished fourth in the Professional Bowlers Association's Bayer Viper Open that aired Sunday on ESPN. The show was taped in November as part of the World Series of Bowling at the South Point Resort/Casino complex in Las Vegas.
On Jan. 15, Fagan ended up second to Bill O'Neill of Southampton, Pa., in the 42nd annual Brunswick Ballmaster Open at Tali Bowling Center in Helsinki, Finland.
After leading the Viper Open entering the stepladder, Fagan was eliminated in the opening round of the finals with a 192 score. Eventual winner Stuart Williams of England had 238, Venezuela's Ildemara Ruiz had 213 and Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill., rolled 203. Fagan earned $4,000.
In Helsinki, O'Neill won 235-224 to take the first of 14 qualifying events on the World Tenpin Bowling Association's 2012 World Bowling Tour. Fagan, who was third entering the stepladder, beat England's Dom Barrett 232-214 and Finnish bowler Mika Koivuniemi of Hartland, Mich., 251-233 to advance to the title match.
Other Dallas-Fort Worth bowlers who competed in Finland were Double Oak's Chris Barnes and Carrollton's Dino Castillo. All are bowling this week in the United States Bowling Congress Masters in Henderson, Nev.
