Grape skin extract may help with diabetes treatment

There has been a great deal of excitement about the potential health benefits of grape seed extract. Grape skin extract may prove helpful in the treatment of diabetes reported the Doctor's Health Press on June 20, 2014. This is very significant in view of the fact that the number of people with diabetes in the U.S. alone has doubled to greater than 26 million people over the past decade.

Delicious, & nutritious grapes

A study from Wayne State University shows that grape skin extract has been found to inhibit hyperglycemia. This means that grape skin extract could be helpful in treating patients with diabetes. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine of the National Institutes of Health has invested $2.1 million in this study to investigate the effectiveness of grape skin extract in fighting the effects of hyperglycemia. The safety and effectiveness of grape seed extract in treating type 2 diabetes has also been investigated.

Hopefully this study will lead to the creation of a safe, targeted nutritional intervention for patients who are suffering from diabetes which could be used as a complement to traditional treatments. However, it appears that treating diabetes with grape skin extract is only useful during the early stages. Still, this study will help to determine if this preliminary information will lead to clinical trials with a goal of assessing grape skin extract’s effectiveness as a low-cost nutritional supplement for patients with diabetes. The ultimate goal would be to provide patients who are suffering from diabetes with a safe and natural supplement to help fight the effects of the disease.

There are many other studies which have suggested that consuming red wine will lower the incidence of coronary heart disease. This is likely attributed to the antioxidant effect of a particular type of grape skin extract which is called resveratrol reports Resveratrol Research Labs. Resveratrol is also marketed as having anti-aging effects and for use as a dietary supplement in order to help lose weight. It is said resveratrol in grape skin helps lower cholesterol, fight cardiovascular disease, lower blood pressure and fight carcinogens. With diabetes now added to the list of illnesses which grape skin extract can help fight it is clear grape seed extract is an exciting supplement worth studying in great depth.
