An internet and literature review was conducted to ascertain the prevalence of potential grant soliciting agencies which may present, as funding sources for personal research projects. The following, is an area specific review, of the most prominent funding agencies, which have monies available of potential research. This author chose agencies in Idaho as the main focus of interest as this is his state of residence.
Funding for research is available if one knows where to look for it. This author identified several funding sources which may prove to be viable contacts for research promotion. The internet is full of pay sites which require joining some affiliation or another. This author weeded out what was not relevant to education and describes funding sources which fit the author’s research most closely.
Department of Education DOE
This year the U.S. Department of Education (ED) is providing...
Nearly $37 billion to states and school districts to improve K-12 schools and meet the special needs of students.
About $2.4 billion to help strengthen teaching and learning in colleges and other postsecondary institutions.
Over $4 billion to support rehabilitation, adult education, research and development, statistics, and assessment.
About $1.5 billion in contracts for goods and services necessary to carry out its mission, (DOE web page, 2007).
This author found the subsections to the DOE web page to include potential relevant directions for his personal research project. Strengthening teaching and learning in colleges and other postsecondary institutions and adult education, research and development, statistics, and assessment were felt to be viable directions for grant pursuits.
The state of Idaho list grant funding agencies and the top three were identified for potential contact and they were: The J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Foundation contribute almost 24 million to research annually; The Laura Moore Cunningham foundation earmarks over 4 million yearly for research; and the Micron Technology group contributes another 3.7 million to grant proposals and support, (The Grants-man-ship Center, 2007). Though minimal by national standards these agencies fund research each year for educational and technological purposes.
Other Potential Contacts
Research reveals a plethora of potential grant agencies which might fit with the author’s subject of interest. Grants.gov, lists thousands of categories, sections and departments which solicit grant proposals for funding purposes, (Grants.Gov, 2007). Finally, Learning.com, lists school referenced grant funding agencies, for potential funding through institutions of higher education, (learning.com, 2007).
Potential funding creates an aura of excitement with what was, up to this point, personal research. Professional funding creates the basis for the continuance of potential research and encourages the atmosphere of relevance within the educational community. Researchers know they have arrived, when the research they forward is worthy of funding. This author sees grants as the methodology for continuing research and program development parameters, for application, in the institution which he is now associated. Grants are just another process which, when mastered, can empower a theory to application. This author sees grants as the opportunity to forward his ideology about Learning Styles and the implication which surrounds this new and exciting subject. LSI as a curricular aligning methodology seems to work and work well. This author’s intentions are to pursue this topic, to what ever culmination this project warrants. If this includes funding from grant awarding agencies then this project has a better then average chance to impact education as this author believes it will. This author sees this project as growing when the results of this strategy become more widely known and could potentially forward a trend in education which places the student at the center of the educational equation.
