Granlund returns; Wild ran over by the Rangers

The Minnesota Wild have looked lost this season without Mikael Granlund in the lineup.

Sunday Madison Square Garden, they didn’t look much different with the young phenom in the lineup.

Granlund won a face-off that led to Jason Pominville’s 17th goal of the season. However, the New York Rangers dominated the Wild after surrendering the first goal en route to a 3-1 victory.

Pominville re-directed a cross-ice pass from Ryan Suter past Cam Talbot four minutes and eight seconds into the game.

The Rangers (13-8-2) turned the game around midway through the opening period.

The Wild (20-13-5) started running around and chasing in their end before Mikko Koivu took a tripping penalty. From there it was all Rangers.

The Rangers got on the board late in the first period when former Wild forward Benoit Pouliot re-directed a pass from Ryan McDonagh into the open net behind Niklas Backstrom on the Rangers’ second power play of the game.

Carl Hagelin broke the 1-1 midway through the second period with a wrist shot that cleanly beat Backstom over the glove shoulder. The Rangers continued to put the pressure on the Wild and extended their lead to two when Mats Zuccarello one-timed a pass from Derrick Brassard past Backstrom at the 18:35 mark of the middle period. The Rangers outshot the Wild 17-5 in the second period.

The Rangers capped the scoring when Chris Kreider fanned on a shot attempt. Backstrom tried to poke the puck, but missed. The puck slid between the goaltender’s pads to give the Rangers a three-goal lead.

The Wild return to action Monday against the Philadelphia Flyers at the Wells Fargo Center.
