A grandson and his girlfriend have been arrested for the murder and dismemberment of his grandparents. The boy’s grandfather was discovered dead last week. This week the dismembered remains of his grandmother were found.
The police discovered the partial remains of Shirley Severance, 70, at a reservoir in Sterling, Colorado and the remainder of her body was found in Lorenzo, Nebraska. Her husband, Charles Severance, 70, was found dead in their home last week.
Sterling Police Chief Tyson Kerr stated that the couple’s grandson, Brendan Lee Johnson, 19, and his girlfriend, Cassandra Ann Rieb, 18, were arrested in connection with their murder. Kerr said, “These are the charges they are being held on and not necessarily the formal charges.”
“In addition, some of these charges may be filed as crimes against an at-risk adult.” Kerr revealed that Johnson and Rieb are currently being held without bond on suspicion of first-degree murder as well as felony robbery, theft and forgery charges. They are being held in the Logan County jail.
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Sterling police and the Logan County Sheriff’s Office are processing multiple crime scenes in the process of the ongoing investigation. An autopsy will be performed this week on Shirley Severence.
The judge in the case has issued a gag order preventing Logan County District Attorney Brittny Lewton from discussing the specifics of the case.
