In 1996, the Grands as Parents group was formed by a group of grandparents who were committed to addressing one of the Philadelphia's most insidious problems. In the United States alone, there are well over four million children being raised by a grandparent. The greater Philadelphia area has 22,000 and growing from issues such as socioeconomic problems, missing parental influence, drugs and crime leading to parental prison time.
The Grand as Parents met this problem head on starting within their own homes and reaching out to surrounding communities. The organization began providing the basics for families in need - food, clothing and shelter. After that a need for legal services, health services, mental services and adequate educational services were necessary.
Grands as Parents has worked with families and their children with an alumni of 30 college graduates. Services to families within the new millennium has been approximately 1,000 families and growing strong. The goal is to "Help A Child Smile" with more grass root chapters throughout the Philadelphia area.
Come out and meet everyone involved at the Grands as Parents Annual Prize as Right fundraiser. On Oct. 26, 2013 from noon until ? at the African American United Fund Conference Center, 2231 N. Broad St., there will be a fundraising brunch. A donation of $21 includes brunch, fun and prizes. Bring the whole family!
