Proud grandparents -- isn't that redundant? (EJ)
According to the dictionary, a grandparent is simply the parent of a parent. But with Boomers taking on the role of grandparent in record numbers, a grandparent is so much more. Even in the role of frequent cartaker, grandparents today are so much more involved in the lives of their grandchildren -- with pleasure, and the relationship forged between a grandparent and grandchild is extra-special and perhaps more meaningful than ever.
In an effort to enhance the traditional dictionary definition, here are a few additional ways to describe what a grandparent is:
• Grandparents give unconditional love, teach kindness, show patience, share humor, and, sometimes even still bake cookies.
• Grandparents are a delicious mixture of bear hugs, smothering kisses, wonderful stories, laughter, and love, blended together to inspire, nurture, and enrich the lives of their grandchildren.
• Grandparents are putty in the hands of their precious progeny.
• Grandparents are those special people whose arms can enfold you and soothe away any bumps a day can bring.
• Grandparents will sit with kids for hours, never tiring of the gilded words, random thoughts, and giggles that come from the delicious mouths of their beloved and precious little geniuses.
• Grandparents are short on criticism and long on love – the giving and the getting.
• Grandparents are the keepers and teachers of the traditions that linger in our hearts and memories from generation to generation.
Spending time with a grandparent is precious and priceless. Why not make every day Grandparents Day? Call your grandmother or grandfather just because, and say “I love you.” Nothing will mean more to them.
