A woman was shot in a drive-by as she was traveling on Highway 85 with her granddaughter late Monday night in Fayette County, officials said.
Deputies on Tuesday were still searching for the suspect who fired into her car while both vehicles were moving, according to the Fayette County Sheriff's Office. The incident happened around 11 p.m. on Highway 85 near Roberts Road, just north of Fayetteville, Fayette County Sheriff Barry H. Babb said in news released.
The woman, who has not been identified, told Clayton County police she was shot while driving through North Fayette County, the Fayette County sheriff said.
The woman said she was driving with her 15-year-old granddaughter when an older model dark-colored car pulled up beside them on the driver's side, Babb said. Someone from inside the vehicle fired one round, striking the victim, the sheriff said. He did not say where on the body the woman was struck.
The shooting occurred while the vehicles were still in motion, Babb said.
The wounded woman continued to drive until she got to a gas station in nearby Clayton County where she called 911, the sheriff said. So far, deputies were not able to provide a detailed description of the suspect or the vehicle. It's also unclear what prompted the shooting and if the woman was targeted.
Deputies did not release any information on the woman’s condition or if she had to be transported to the hospital. It’s also unclear if they have any motive for the shooting.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Fayette County Sheriff's detectives at (770) 716-4750.
