The death of a 6-month-old little girl is being called a homicide on Oct. 7 as police continue to look into what exactly happened inside a suburban Oak Lawn, Ill. home, according to ABC 7 News. Alfreda Giedrojc, 61, of Oak Lawn, Ill. has been charged with first degree murder for the death of her granddaughter, Vivian, of Bolingbrook.
Giedrojc is being held without bond. She is behind bars after she was accused of using a sledgehammer and a carving knife to murder her little granddaughter. They parents were not home with the child at the time of the incident. Police were called to the home for a report of an armed suspect. When they got to the scene, officers state they were told that a baby had suffered a considerable injury. The baby was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
On Oct. 7, bail was denied by a judge for Giedrojc. The attack happened Sunday morning in the home of Giedrojc and her husband, according to authorities. The infant was brought home for a visit. The baby's father and grandfather briefly left the house to help another relative across the street with a project when Giedrojc killed the baby.
"The defendant took the victim off of the couch where she had been sleeping and placed the baby on the floor and retrieved a sledgehammer from her closet, which she had placed there the night before," said Michael Deno, Assistant Cook County State's Attorney. "The defendant then hit the victim repeatedly in the head and body with the sledgehammer. Since the victim was still crying and moving the defendant went into the kitchen and retrieved a large carving knife. The defendant then picked the victim up, held her, and then slit her throat with the knife," said Deno.
The baby's grandfather came home to the horrific discovery and called 911. Police would not comment on what kind of mental health that Giedrojc was in or a possible motive for the murder. Police are not releasing any other information at this time since it is an ongoing investigation. Giedrojc is due back in court on October 28, 2013.
