A 23-month-old boy was allegedly shot and killed by his grandfather who police said was aiming for his father Tuesday night near Lilburn.
Deandre Vega died less than three weeks before his second birthday, according to Gwinnett County police.
His grandfather, Mr. Luis Efrain Torres, 39, was charged with felony murder and aggravated assault, police spokesman Sgt. Jake Smith said.
Shortly before 10 p.m., officers responded to 5238 Stafford Drive after getting reports of gunfire.
They found the wounded toddler who was then rushed to a local hospital where he died a short time later.
Investigators said the victims and his parents were visiting the Mr. Torres' home when an argument began between Mr. Torres and the child’s father, Mr. Rochell McCoy, 29, of Norcross.
“During the argument Torres produced a handgun and fired several shots at McCoy in the driveway of the home,” Cpl. Smith said. “One of the shots struck Vega.”
No one else was hurt, police said.
Mr. Torres remained on scene and was taken into police custody without incident. He remains at the Gwinnett County Detention Center without bond Wednesday.
