Grand Valley State University recently announced plans to headquarter its charter school operations in Downtown Detroit. The university will purchase an office building to house offices and support services for the university-sponsored charter schools.
The building is located at 163 Madison, near Comerica Park, and is on .26 acres of land, according to a press release. It will purchase the building from Waycor Development, who currently uses it for office space, for $3 million dollars. The building was built in 1908 and is in good condidtion, according to the university, but will need some minor repairs and renovations.
Grand Valley State University currently runs 44 charter schools educating roughly 23,000 students, 24 of which are in the Detroit-area. GVSU charter schools include Detroit Merit, Detroit Premeire, and Detroit Enterprise, according to the Detroit Free Press. Grand Valley also provides professional development and programming in rental property in the Metro Detroit area.
