Grand Hotels of San Francisco: Galleria Park for a fun experience

Explore another of San Francisco’s Grand Hotels, the Galleria Park Hotel. Most boutique hotels would not fall into this category, however due to its historic architecture and impressive lobby it qualifies. This is one of my favorite hotels and one that I recommend to family and friends.

This historic hotel was originally built as the Sutter Hotel in 1911 and later owned by Kimpton, who renovated the property in the 1980’s. After Joie de Vivre Hospitality bought the hotel in 2005, it spent over $7 million renovating this landmark property. The renovation updated the hotel which sorely needed it.

Showcasing vibrant tones and upscale, eclectic finishings, as well as a host of unique business traveler amenities, the “new” contemporary Art Deco, the Galleria Park offers guests one of the only boutique alternatives in the heart of the city’s Financial District.

Amenities are tailored to the needs of the sophisticated modern traveler—including flat-screen televisions, CD player/alarm clocks with MP3 connectors and 300-thread-count Frette linens and bathrobes— included in all 177 guestrooms.

Additional amenities include meeting and banquet rooms, complimentary wired and wireless Internet access, business center and fitness room. Business travelers appreciate the hotel’s business honor bar—a version of a typical mini bar, but stocked with office materials instead. Guest rooms feature ergonomic desk chairs and comfortable furniture. Business rates include complimentary dry cleaning, parking, and meal credits.

Leisure travelers enjoy the hotel’s proximity to downtown shops, its nightly wine reception and the unique rooftop terrace and walking track, which offers a breath of fresh air in San Francisco’s urban oasis. While conveniently located near Union Square and the Financial District, you will feel that you are staying in relaxed luxurious environment, almost an escape.

The lobby and hotel features a unique mixture of elements from different eras—Art Deco, vintage and mid-Century—arranged in an eclectic fashion, staying true to the hotel’s historic ambiance while adding a modern feel. Bold gold tones, subdued blues and greens breathe new life into the lobby area, while artwork sourced from San Francisco’s Lost Art Salon adds a sense of place. This beautiful artwork adorning the hotel is in keeping with the rich architectural history spanning nearly 100 years. Careful attention has been paid to preserving the historic features of the hotel such as the dramatic lobby fireplace and the wrought iron decorating the mezzanine level. The marble staircase is both sturdy and architecturally interesting.

The hotel restaurant, Midi is a modern California brasserie San Francisco restaurant, serving everyone from power-suits to power-shoppers. Acclaimed chef Michelle Mah infuses traditional brasserie fare with local California flair. Midi has received a recommendation from the Michelin Guide! See below for a video of the restaurant.

The hotel is focused on offering the highest level of guest satisfaction while doing its part for the enviornment. Parent company Joie de Vivre has been certified as a green business by San Francisco Green Business. Their Green Dreams program applies that mission to recycling and both to energy and water conservation. The bathroom products are even compostable.

A stay at this hotel will leave you rejuvenated and already making excuses to return.
