Grand Canyon non-commerical river rafting lottery opens

Grand Canyon National Park is now accepting applications from individuals who want to compete for a noncommerical river rafting permit for 2013. A total of 449 permits will be awarded through a lottery. Applications must be received by the park by 12:00 p.m. MST on Wednesday, February 22nd.

The application fee is $25. Individuals selected to receive a permit will be notified and charged an additional $400 non-refundable deposit. Individuals must be 18 years of age or older. Because noncommerical trips are self-guided, only individuals with white water rafting experience may apply. Only one river trip per year is allowed in the Grand Canyon National Park; individuals who are already scheduled on a commerical or noncommercial river trip for 2013 may not apply.

In the event that lottery winners decline their trips, follow-up lotteries are held to reassign dates. For a list of dates that will be assigned for 2013, click here. Only those individuals who are committed to accepting a date should apply. Applicants are encourged to list a alternate trip leader's name on their applications in the event something prohibits a lottery winning applicant from taking the river trip. Any individual, however, may be named on only one application per year.
