'Gran Turismo 5', 'Resistance', other PS3 games losing multiplayer in 2014

Sony announced Friday that several Playstation 3 games, including Gran Turismo 5 and the Resistance series will say farewell in 2014 to the ability to play with others online.

Racing with others online in Gran Turismo 5 will cease on May 20, 2014 while Resistance: Fall of Man, Resistance 2 and Resistance 3 will all see their multiplayer matches sunsetted on March 28, 2014.

While those games will still have their single-player campaigns playable, MAG and SOCOM: Confrontation will basically become coasters on Jan. 28, 2014. Both games are online only and don't support anyway to play offline. SOCOM: Special Forces will also see its multiplayer switched off on that date but still has an offline mode to play.

Multiplayer being switched off for games is the unfortunate side effect of running dedicated servers to support specific titles. Eventually, the player population does not justify the cost of running and maintaining these servers so they are switched off.
