The 55thGrammy Awards show brought thrills and chills with fantastic and not-so-fantastic musical performances and fabulous and not-so-fabulous outfits. Taylor Swift’s opening performance was apparently for the kids before their bedtime. Then J-Lo walked out. Wow! She showed everyone how to work a flowing black dress that resembled a teddy on one side. It was hot and she was the best dressed until Carrie Underwood showed up. The gorgeous gray silk gown Carrie performed in onstage was used as a backdrop for a colorful light show. Even her red carpet black sequin gown by Roberto Cavalli was stunning. Justin Timberlake rocked like the old days and looked amazing in his tuxedo and black and white shoes except for one thing. Next time, he’s got to lose the white socks which never go well with black slacks. Justin’s performance with Jay-Z was entertaining. Other well-dressed men included John Mayer in a fairly bright blue velvet jacket and ample blue bow tie and Frank Ocean in a fashion forward slate blue suit with no collar or lapel. Unfortunately, Frank’s performance was not as interesting. He was apparently very nervous based on his many off-key notes.
Several celebrities took advantage of the opportunity for wardrobe changes – good decisions for most who showed off better choices while onstage. Rihanna’s red gown on the red carpet revealed her nipples, but other than that, the black sheath with the low cut back that she wore onstage was very flattering and sophisticated. Adele won the Grammy for Best Pop Solo Performance, but no one has yet to explain what she was thinking by wearing that dress that looked like she ripped off her grandma’s 40 year-old drapes. Doesn’t she have any friends to give her advice or does she refuse to listen to anyone? OMG!
Katie Perry wore a long pastel green gown that showed a lot of boobies. Another dress that pushed the envelope so far it was hanging over the edge was the long black gown worn by Kelly Rowland. There were cut-out designs up to her crotch and around the front of her breasts that it almost showed as much skin as it covered. Not very classy.
Bruno Mars with a special appearance by Sting gave one of the night’s favorite performances. Ziggy and Damian Marley joined them along with Rihanna. A blonde Kelly Clarkson belted out an incredible tribute to Patti Page and Carol King. Her long black velvet gown with wide rhinestone waistband was a much better choice over her earlier short black, belted dress with full skirt. It was not a flattering look.
The ever-cool, ageless Prince wearing shades and a black hood presented the Grammy for Record of the Year to Gotye and Kimbra for Somebody that I Used to Know. LL Cool J and Chuck D closed out the show with a high energy performance that included top drummer Travis Barker and guitarist Tom Morello. The most controversial issue – Rihanna showing up with Chris Brown as her date.
